a also an (before a vowel sound) — indefinite article, determiner

Перед словом, начинающимся с гласной, используется вариант an. Следует иметь в виду, что надо обращать внимание не на написание первой буквы слова, а на ее произношение. Так, правильно будет an RAF officer (в произношении буквы R первый звук - гласный), но a UN official (в произношении буквы U первый звук - согласный [й])

1 (before a noun that names someone or something not already mentioned or known about):
